Hollister Representative, Paul Bixler, was our speaker for our March 14th meeting. As he introduced himself he offered the information that he too had been an ostomates for a period of time and was very aware of the importance secure and comfortable products made in the life of ostomates. He went on to tell us that Hollister as a company was celebrating its 95th anniversary. Its mission is to make life more rewarding for the ostomate. 40-75% have skin problems. Hollister has a staff of 60 people to answer questions, including 2 WOCN nurses, when you call their 800# for help: 888-808-7456,
Monday to Friday 8:00AM-5:00PM
Their product line has many improvements. So many that interested our members that when Paul was finished with his demonstration and invited members to come to his table at least a dozen of those attending the meeting surrounded him with questions and were taking a closer look at the many new items. The filters that are now on pouches that release gas build up work so well that they don’t need to be covered when you are bathing or swimming. The one piece pouches have belt tabs so a belt can be worn for additional security. Another new item is a peek-a-boo window on the urostomy pouch. Karaya is still being used to adhere to the skin on many different pouches.
Paul talked about the benefit of a properly placed stoma, and the importance of this being done pre operatively whenever possible. This is best done by the WOCN nurse being sure the stoma will be supported by the large rectus muscle and placed away from scar tissue, waistline and other skin depressions.
One member asked about laying on his abdomen when sleeping. This wouldn’t be easy! You need to give the ostomy pouch room to collect the effluent. The catalog has printed on the opening page “This is our quest. Keeping Peristomal skin healthy. The way it was meant to be.” Hollister ostomy care is dedicated to delivering products that provide optimum fit to prevent leakage, along with the best skin interface formulations to protect and maintain healthy skin. “We believe every unique person with a stoma deserves a customized solution, and the positive outcomes that can result.
Our products and services are meant to do just that. Thank you for partnering with us on our journey.” “Maintaining the right environment makes all the difference. “Cera Plus skin barrier with Remois technology. The newest skin barrier is infused with ceramide, the skin’s natural protection against dryness. The CeraPlus skin barrier is designed to help protect the skin’s own moisture barrier, and is available on Premier one-piece and new image two piece pouching systems. Ceramide is a natural component of human skin, consisting of waxy lipid molecules. Ceramide links cells of the outer skin together to form a waterproof protective barrier.Ceramides also prevent water loss that can lead to skin damage and dryness.
They are available on skin barriers that are flat with floating flange with or without tape border on convex and extended wear barriers, on drainable pouches with flat or convex barriers. Why choose a 2 piece system? With a 2 piece pouching system the skin barrier and pouch are separate and connect together with a plastic ring or flange.
Here are a few reasons why you might want to use a 2 piece system:
1) You may want to change your pouch more often than your skin barrier.
2)You may want to alternate between different pouch styles.
For example, you might want to wear a smaller pouch during exercise or in the shower, and a larger pouch at night.
3)You might find it easier to center your skin barrier over your stoma using a 2 piece system.
Skin barriers come in flat or convex, with and without a tape border, in cera plus, flextend, flexwear, with and without a tape border. The Hollister integrated floating flange as featured in the new image two piece pouching system offers optimal flexibility and security for you. The first of it’s kind this integrated floating flange helps relieve pressure on the tender postoperative abdomen while offering an easy to use low profile solution you can continue to use. It is included in all flat and convex New Image skin barriers. Convex Skin Barrier Options: Why choose a 2 piece pouching system?
